Red kite, historical artwork

Red kite. Historical artwork of a red kite (Milvus milvus) perched on a branch. This bird of prey inhabits woodland near open country across most of Europe, apart from the northern parts. It feeds on small mammals and carrion. It may reach a length of up to 65 centimetres, with a wingspan of nearly two metres. This artwork was drawn by Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935)

Milvus milvus
Protected in the UK and increasing its range. Mainly found in Wales. Found in western Europe and extreme northern Africa. Lives in open wooded land and varied country including forests or woods mixed with farmland, pasture or heathland. Historically occurred in cities and still quite closely associated with man visiting rich feeding areas on edges of towns e.g. rubbish dumps. Essentially eats carrion and small or medium-sized mammals and birds. Nests in trees. Mainly migratory in north and central Europe
