Chinstrap penguin feeding chick

Chinstrap penguin (Pygoscelis antarctica) feeding its seven-week-old chick by regurgitating food. Chinstrap penguins typically lay two eggs. The parents take turns to incubate them in shifts of 5-10 days. This chick is at about the age when it will leave the nest to huddle with other young penguins in what is termed a creche. Chicks and eggs are preyed on by sheathbills and brown skuas. Chinstrap penguins feed mainly on krill, as well as small fish and crustaceans. They live around the Antarctic peninsula and nearby islands, and are sometimes found on large icebergs in the open ocean. Photographed on Signy Island, South Orkney Islands
