New Forest Pannage Featured New Forest Pony Print

New Forest Pannage

Domestic pigs roam the roadside near Burley, Hampshire, as they take part in Pannage, or 'Common of mast', where the animals are allowed to wander in the New Forest during a set time in the Autumn to feast on the acorns that have fallen, which in large quantities are dangerous for the ponies and cattle. The Forestry Commission has confirmed that pannage has been extended from November 12 past the usual 60 days, until Sunday December 17, because of the abundance of acorns this year
