Climbing perch

Climbing perch. These fish, from the genus Anabas, are found in southern Asia, including India, Burma, Indonesia and the Philippines. The specimens shown here are from India. Climbing perch have both small gills and a respiratory organ above the gills allowing them to breathe air. They can spend some 8 hours out of water. This additional organ has evolved because they inhabit oxygen-poor waters. They are capable of crossing land to find new water, moving by using their tails and front fins. They eat insects, plants and crustaceans. Artwork from the first volume (first period of 1888) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'
