Roman seafood mosaic

Roman seafood mosaic. Mosaics consist of small pieces of coloured glass or stone, used to form an image or pattern on a floor or wall. This marine fauna mosaic is from the House of the Faun, in Pompeii, Italy, and accurately depicts over twenty forms of fish, shellfish and eels. At centre, an octopus attacks a lobster. Surrounding them are dogfish, morays, sea basses, sea breams, mullets, and electric rays. This mosaic is displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Naples, Italy

Pelican eel

Pelican eel (Eurypharynx pelecanoides), computer artwork. This is a deep sea fish, living in the lightless (aphotic) zone below around 500 metres. It has been recorded in the very deep sea, up to eight kilometres below the surface. It can reach a length of around a metre, but its widely hinged jaw and expandable stomach means that it can swallow prey much larger than itself. This typically includes other fish, cephalopods and shrimp. It is found in temperate and tropical seas worldwide

A shrimp cleans a moray eel's mouth, off Tulamben, on the Indonesian resort island of Bali May 14, 2011. Cleaner shrimp is a generic term for any swimming decapod crustacean that cleans other organisms of parasites. This symbiotic relationship benefits the fish by having parasites removed from them, and the shrimp gets its food. Picture taken May 14, 2011.
