Orion constellation Featured Taurus Print

Orion constellation

Orion constellation. Orion, the hunter, is one of the best known constellations in the sky. Orion's belt is formed of three bright stars in a row, from left to right, Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka (Zeta, Epsilon and Delta Orionis respectively). At upper left is the red supergiant Betelgeuse (Alpha Orionis) while at lower right is the white supergiant Rigel (Beta Orionis). Below the belt is the sword of Orion, which contains the Orion nebula (M42), which is visible as a pink patch. Two bright stars in neighbouring constellations are also seen: at bottom left is Sirius (Alpha Canis Majoris) in Canis Major, and at upper right is Aldebaran (Alpha Tauri) in Taurus

Eugene Cernan on Moon Apollo 17 Featured Taurus Print

Eugene Cernan on Moon Apollo 17

The last man on the Moon. Astronaut Eugene Cernan stands on the Moon during the Apollo 17 mission. At right is part of the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV), with its communications antenna. Apollo 17 arrived on the Moon in the Taurus-Littrow site at the southern edge of the Mare Serenitatis on 11 December 1972. Cernan and fellow astronaut Harrison Schmitt spent 72 hours on the Moon, performing three excursions in the LRV. This was the last Apollo Moon mission, and Cernan was the last human to stand on the surface of the Moon. Astronaut Ronald Evans remained in the orbiting Command Module. The astronauts returned safely to Earth on 19 December 1972

Night sky & sunset Featured Taurus Print

Night sky & sunset

Taurus, Pleiades and Auriga. Optical photograph of the constellations of Taurus (the Bull), Pleiades (the Seven Sisters) and Auriga (the Charioteer). Taurus is one of the 12 zodiacal constellations. The V-shaped pattern of stars which forms the bull's head are seen just right of centre. The brightest star of the 'V' is the red giant Aldebaran. The bright star cluster known as the Pleiades (M45) is seen above Taurus. On the left of the image is the constellation of Auriga, the bright star (upper left) being Capella, the sixth brightest luminary of the Heavens. It is a binary system (two stars rotating about a common centre of gravity). Photographed in Vancouver, Canada
