Sucevita monastery Featured Byzantine Architecture Print

Sucevita monastery

The Iese Genealogy and Family Tree fresco.Eastern Orthodox convent situated in the Northeastern part of Romania. It is situated near the Sucevita River, in the village Sucevita, 18 km away from the city of Radauti, Suceava County. It is located in the southern part of the historical region of Bucovina (northwestern Moldavia). It was built in 1585 by Ieremia Movila, Gheorghe Movila and Simion Movila. The architecture of the church contains both Byzantine and Gothic elements, and some elements typical to other painted churches of northern Moldavia. Both interior and exterior walls are covered by mural paintings, which are of great artistic value and depict biblical episodes from the Old and New Testament. The paintings date from around 1601, which makes Sucevita one of the last monasteries to be decorated in the famous Moldavian style of exterior paintings. In 2010, the monastery has been inscribed by UNESCO on its list of World Heritage Sites

Facade of St Marks Basilica, Venice 2

Venice, Italy - 5 September 2017
Venice is one of the great cities of the world, famed for its canals, sublime architecture, beauty and exotic history. It is also inundated by tourists for much of the year, stupidly expensive, often smelly and slowly sinking into the Adriatic. Oh dear - you pick. At the very heart of historic Venice is St Marks Square, graced by three iconic buildings - St Marks Basilica, the Ducal Palace and Bell Tower. The first church at St Marks dates from the 9th century; the present, lavish basilica, constructed in Byzantine style, was consecrated in 1084-5 CE. Its extravagant exterior is covered with statues, domes, gilding and mosaics
