Neurofibromatosis, 17th century artwork Featured Jusepe de Ribera Print

Neurofibromatosis, 17th century artwork

Neurofibromatosis. 17th century artwork of a man with neck deformities (neurofibromas) due to neurofibromatosis. These tumours arise from the fibrous coverings of nerves. Although these growths are harmless, they can lead to physical deformation and may turn cancerous. The artwork is by the Spanish painter Jusepe 'Lo Spagnoletto' de Ribera (1591-1652). The original artwork was composed using red chalk. This copy is from the German book 'Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin' (Caricature and Satire in Medicine, 1921) by the German art historian and physician Eugen Hollander (1867-1932)
