First published, 1901. Illustrated by Byam Shaw, b November 13, 1872 January 26, 1919. Both had lived in India. The prisoner 's lover bears his child after he has died at the gallows: 'When Poppies bloomed again, she bore His child who gaily laughed and crowed, While round his tiny neck he wore The rubies given on the road.'
