William Stukeley, English antiquarian

William Stukeley (1687-1765), English antiquarian, physician, and author. Stukeley studied at the University of Cambridge's Corpus Christi College, then studied medicine in London. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1717, and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1720. His main works concerned the prehistoric sites of Stonehenge and Avebury. His work helped establish the Society of Antiquaries of London, of which he was secretary and fellow. Stukeley also wrote a 1752 memoir of his friend, the English physicist Isaac Newton.
