The Netherlands - Rotterdam - Delft Gate (Delftsche Poort) Featured Delft Print

The Netherlands - Rotterdam - Delft Gate (Delftsche Poort)

The Netherlands - Rotterdam - Delft Gate (Delftsche Poort) - built in 1764 to a design by architect Pieter de Swart. Dismantled in 1939 due to an enlargement of the port - however the removed stones were damaged irreparably by bombing during WW2. There is now a steel frame artistic reconstruction of the gate (the Nieuwe Delftse Poort), constructed in 1995. Date: 1903

'Girl with a Pearl Earring', c1665. Artist: Jan Vermeer Featured Delft Print

'Girl with a Pearl Earring', c1665. Artist: Jan Vermeer

'Girl with a Pearl Earring', c1665. The girl's headdress has an exotic effect. Turbans were a popular fashionable accessory in Europe as early as the 15th century. It has been suggested that the pearl in Vermeer's painting is a symbol of chastity. From the collection of the Mauritshuis, the Hague, Netherlands
