John Ruskin, 1853-1854, (1944). Creator: John Everett Millais

John Ruskin, 1853-1854, (1944). Portrait of English artist, critic and author John Ruskin (1819-1900), by his friend John Everett Millais. It was painted at Brig o'Turk, in the Trossachs near Stirling in Scotland, and the frequent rain and plagues of midges made the experience trying for both sitter and painter. To complicate matters further, Millais was falling in love with Ruskin's wife Effie. She left Ruskin and married Millais, and Ruskin eventually gave the picture to his old Oxford friend Sir Henry Acland. Painting in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. From "British Portrait Painters", by John Russell. [Collins, London, 1944]

Isle of Man coast, and gateway to Highlands Featured Stirling Print

Isle of Man coast, and gateway to Highlands

A panoramic view of the coast of the Isle of Man photographed from Cumbria (Cumberland) at a point over 40 miles away, which was taken by means of infra-red plate and filter and a long-focus lens - the Irish Sea given the appearance of a great lake! The photograph was taken from a point south-west of Wast Water, Cumbria. The greater part of the eastern coast of the Isle of Man is shown, from a point near Ramsey to the low-lying land in the southerly part of the island. At the bottom is another infra-red photograph of the gateway to the Highlands (Rob Roy country), taken from the Wallace Monument at Stirling, Scotland. Date: 1932

Weather - Snow - Stirling, Scotland Featured Stirling Print

Weather - Snow - Stirling, Scotland

Sheep graze on a snow-covered field near Stirling, Scotland, as the first snows of winter hit Scotland after one of the warmest autumns on record. The temperatures have now slipped down to freezing, although it will be feeling even colder than that in some parts of the country because of a bitterly cold north-wind. The snowfalls and cold spell follow the warmest October since records began in 1659
