Hand-coloured printed lithograph entitled Lilac, lithographed by Charles Joseph Hullmandel (1789-1850) after an original by Valentine Bartholomew (1799-1879). From Bartholomew's 'A Selection of Flowers Adapted Principally for Students', published in London by R. Ackermann in 1821-1822. Bartholomew's book includes 36 hand-coloured lithographs and is one of the first works to employ lithography for botanical illustration. Plate .
Knights scarlet fleshed Strawberry
Watercolour on paper by Augusta Innes Withers of Knight's scarlet fleshed Strawberry. This is taken from one of ten volumes known as 'Hooker's Fruits' commissioned by the RHS to help standardise the nomenclature of cultivated fruit. After William Hooker suffered a stroke Withers was one of several artists appointed to complete the paintings. Withers was flower painter to Queen Adelaide and Queen Victoria as well as illustrating works by John Lindley and James Bateman. This painting is dated 1825.
Strawberry 'Wilmots Superb'
Watercolour by Charles John Robertson of Strawberry 'Wilmot's Superb'. This is taken from one of ten volumes known as 'Hooker's Fruits' which were commissioned by the RHS to help standardise the nomenclature of cultivated fruit. Robertson is one of several artists who took on the painting after William Hooker suffered a stroke. The painting is dated 1824.
